Nurse Practitioner Shellhorn has worked in the mental health field, in various capacities, since 1995, exclusively through UT Southwestern Medical Center. He began his career as a clinical research assistant in the UTSW Bipolar Disorders Clinic, is very adept in detecting variations within the bipolar spectrum presentation, and discerning whether mood variations are truly suggestive of bipolar disorder, versus a manifestation of a different condition, including PTSD and other trauma-related presentations. NP Shellhorn then joined a community healthcare team project between UTSW and Parkland Health and Hospital System. The provision of community-based patient care was a profound experience fundamentally shifting the rest of NP Shellhorn's nursing career and began his advocacy for healthcare models that are inclusive, comprehensive, mindful of social justice needs and trauma informed. Upon completing his MSN and ANCC board examinations, NP Shellhorn became a provider in the UTSW Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic and also began teaching nurses who were completing clinical hours for their Master's degree, DNP and NP programs. He was the first NP to give a UTSW Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds lecture, and has provided didactic teaching lectures both on and off-campus. NP Shellhorn has been an adjunct faculty member at various state universities including UTA, Texas Tech, and Texas Women's University. He is an advisory board member of the Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center and a member of the Turtle Creek Chorale.
